Santa Monica Teen Mentor & Life Coach

A Note From The Santa Monica Teen & Family Therapist

It is not uncommon for teens to experience emotional imbalance and upheavals during adolescence. I help teens discover alternative ways of responding their challenges. – Sandra

Some teens may begin to show symptoms of emotional challenges during adolescence. If not addressed these symptoms can follow them into adulthood, leaving them emotionally immature and unable to engage in healthy relationships. You may be hesitant to take your teen to a therapist to address these issues, afraid that they will be labeled problem kids or learning disabled. Seeking my assistance as a Teen Life Coach can offer you another opportunity to remedy these problems.

Coaching can be a fun and uplifting experience for your child. In contrast to therapy, where the therapist is seen as the expert, coaching is a collaborative effort between myself and your teen. The focus is on helping your teen create a vision of the life they would like, and supporting them in their journey towards that goal. My training as a Teen Therapist has paved the way for developing more creative and positive ways for working with you and your family. My goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental space for your teen to explore their obstacles, ask their questions and express their feelings.

Sometimes you may not have the time or energy to be as available to your teen  as you would like. It has been said that “It takes a whole village to raise a child.” It can be helpful to know that I am here, should you ever want or need assistance.

Teen Social-Skills Coaching

A Note From The Santa Monica Teen & Family Therapist

Uncovering the reasons behind your adolescent’s withdrawn behavior can help put an end your teenager’s social isolation. – Sandra

Some teens struggle socially, for many reasons. For example:

1. Isolation can be caused by the way these teens look, dress, act, or a combination thereof.
2. Moodiness and erratic or volatile behavior can drive adolescents away from their peer group.
3. Shyness can be a cause of social isolation.
4. Some adolescents may be ostracized by peers due to their excelling academically or underachieving.
5. Adolescents who spend too much time on the internet or playing video games lose touch with their friends. They may replace genuine social interaction with online conversations with strangers.
6. A depressed adolescent often loses interest in everyday activities, dropping out of social groups at school.

Does your teen know how to:

1. Really listen?
2. Make new connections?
3. Let others get to know them?
4. Express what they feel and need?
5. Recognize hidden agendas in others?
6. Communicate respectfully within the family?
7. Set appropriate limits with regards to their bodies?
8. Be assertive (not aggressive) in their communication?

I work with teen clients one-on-one to identify areas where they can improve their social skills, and teach them tips and tricks to improve those skills. I can teach your child how to feel more empowered in social situations.

Working together with me in for a short time, they will learn:

* Conflict management
* How to be more assertive
* How to gain and keep more friends
* How to be confident in social situations

If your teen or young adult child is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it.

What Would A Teen Therapist Say?

A Note From The Santa Monica Teen & Family Therapist

I gently guide teens in thinking about who they truly are, what they want, and how to express themselves with kindness and grace.- Sandra

For teens in need of guidance during one of the most difficult transitions in life, I help them to become independent, self-aware and self-fulfilled young adults. In my book, What Would Your Teen Therapist Say?: A Workbook For Discovering Your True Self-Expression, I present weekly tasks and then provides space for readers to work through the self-reflection process in writing.

Thought-provoking themes in the workbook include listening closely to your conversations to make sure you’re saying what you really mean; paying attention to how you spend your time to determine the worthiness of those activities; examining your belief system to see if it still fits; or asking if yourself if your friends support you and your dreams.

I also invite the reader to identify inspirational moments in their own lives, and challenge them to find success in their failures, along with encouraging them to share the gift of their wisdom with others. Each weekly lesson prompts young readers to answer questions or imagine various scenarios designed to focus on the positive or help the reader develop courage and confidence.

If your teen or young adult child is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it.

Helping Teens Manage Stress

A Note From The Santa Monica Teen & Family Therapist

At no other time in history have teenagers been in need of tools and practices that help them to manage their stress.  – Sandra

Did you know that the ability to cope with negative feelings and move on from bad experiences can be learned?

Self-injury and substance abuse is on the rise among teens and pre-teens. Drug addiction is often based on the user wanting to get away from painful feelings, such as anxiety or depression.

Mindfulness is a term used to describe the practice of observing one’s thoughts and body in the present moment. Mindfulness can literally affect the brain connections involved in attention, memory, and emotional regulation.

In my work with my teenage clients, I teach mindfulness and self-awareness exercises. My goal is to help teens learn how to recognize their feelings and then use that information to respond in helpful and more positive ways.

If your teen or young adult child is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it.

Teen Talk: Making Peace With School Uniforms

A Note From The Santa Monica Teen & Family Therapist

You can still express your unique style while still wearing a school uniform...Sandra

School uniforms are designed to make everyone look similar. Since adolescence is a time when boys and girls start checking each other out, some girls try to stand out in different ways. What kind of attention do you imagine the popular girl’s outfits are attracting? Is that the kind of attention you want, or were you looking for something else?

The fact that you want to follow the dress code shows respect for your school. I think your parents and teachers will appreciate that, and in return, treat you with respect. As for looking cute, there are other creative ways to approach that goal. Although I don’t know your exact uniform, I do know that there may be options in regards to how you wear your hair, as well as accessorizing with bracelets, necklaces, leggings and tights, and shoes.

It is important to find a style that feels right for you. You don’t necessarily have to look like everyone else. However, clothing is just one of the ways that you can express the unique person that you are. A very wise person once told me, “one of the best thing to wear to school and really stand out is a smile.”

If your teen or young adult child is struggling socially or emotionally, I can help you to discover the cause and remedy it.
